Folks with this How too , I hope to shed Some Light on One Of the Great Methods We Use At the Pennsylvania Pay lakes. In This How Too Article , I hope to shed some Light on A Killer way to Rip some lips and Pass on an art that is Older than Most who use it. This great Method was Passed onto me by None other than The P.A. PayLaker legend Himself , Raymond " Herkel " Corcoran. Mid Last year , I met Herk In Star City West Virginia While fishing with Another Carp Angler , West Virginia Carp Angler Legend Justin Gerard. I watched as herkel , brought Out His Trusty pack baits , And So forth. So After fishing A few Hours With Him And His very Cool grandson Bubba , And Rippin us at our Own Fishing Hole , I sent him a few Pm's On the CAG forum and Asked if he could Show a newbie How to properly Fish a Pay Lake. Well , He did Just that. For the Rest Of the Summer , Fall and Winter I became a very astute Student.
I watched as the Master Took simple ingredients And Made magic Happen
with them. Now this wasn't my First Rodeo At a Pay lake , I fished them
many times before with Success , but Not Like I have now. I have Been
Shown and Taught Many Different baits , methods and Rigs From this
great Man , But very Few can Top the Over Lay / Under
lay method. This method is an Ole P.A. Paylaker method that's Prolly
Has Ripped as Many carp as some of the greatest Dough bait Recipes of
the past. Something So Simple , and basic , yet will give you a great
Shot of Putting you into the Money and Keeping your trips to the scale
worth wild. With that Said , I hope this Article Will Spark and
Interest in folks to Visit A pay lake when Your in an area that Has
them , I myself am one of the Lucky ones , as I live 5 Minutes away
From the West Virginia / P.A. Border , So I am able to Fish 84 Lakes
and Lounge , Paradise lakes , Deep valley and My personal Favorite ,
Seghi's 5 lakes. Enjoy
Like Most P.A. Paylakers , I usually Run a Free Line Set Up OR I add a
split Shot to the Line For An Added hook Set. With Some help From My
Man Pat Kelly , I have Modified A Spring to the End Of My Hook to
better hold the under lay for longer Cast when Fishing Wild yellows. My
Set up Is as Fallows :
Hook : Owner Mosquito Hook , Size 1 down to a # 4
Line : I run A Florocarbon or mono line
Swivel : I run a Eagle Claw ( Black ) head Swivel ( Size 12)
Sinker/lead : I Run A 1/4 Oz Split Shot or Free Line.
Reel : Abu Garcia Cardinal 104 / Abu Garcia 6000
Rod : Shakespeare Ugly Stick 6'6" Medium Heavy / 7' medium Heavy Im6
graphite Casting Rod
With this next Picture , You are able to see the Rig Minus the bait : This
next Picture , Is one of My Newest baits I have Been Rippin on. it is a
Modified version of One Of Herkel's baits and Works really Well In Both
Wild Water and pay Lakes. As You can prolly Tell , On the left Is the
Over Lay , Which is More like a Really loose pack , But made From the
Same bait As The under lay. Which Is on the Right Side of the Picture.
The Under Lay is more of a Wet,
Stickier bait almost like a dough bait
of Sorts. Now with that said , there are many baits and ways to run
this. As Steve Lojek Stated , Over lay / Under Lay , can Be used in
More then One or Two Layers. I myself , When Fishing Wild have used as
much as four to Five layers due to current and how much feed I am
placing. I have Also Mixed up the baits when using the Over lay / Under
lay method ( I.E. By Adding black bait as My under lay and Carp crack
As My Over lay )
This next picture , I have the Under Lay with my terminal End. I am
getting Ready to add the Under Lay to the hook , But before I do that ,
I add a pick up to the hook as a " Spit Stopper" As the Next picture
Will Show. I will Get Back to this once we get more into the
Explanation. Notice, I only Added Enough under lay To cover the hook. In My Trials , I
have found that This works better than Chunkin Gobs of bait out all at
once. This Allows me to be More discrete and Not Chunk a 3# Ball of
Chum into the water disturbing others and Drawing attention. Now , With
this Picture , I am Adding the Hook , Under Lay , Smack ( Flavored of
Course ) To the Over lay. Which Is fallowed By a Semi Hard Squeeze of
the Hand ( or hands ) Due to the Amount you add. As Seen next:
Back
to the Pic up. And No I ain't Talking about the one In your Drive way
either. I borrow the Pic up From Our Southern pay Lake brethren which
they Profected By the way. I have found while carp Will Root through
the Over lay once it brakes down and the over lay does also , I needed
Something , and I Quote my Friend on this one , I needed something to
"Hang them Selves On" . So I took some advice from a Puff Master and
gave it a shot and it increased my hook ups ten fold!
With the next Set of Pictures , I will Show you one of the things which
I think is very neat about pack baits and Over lay / Under lay , Is
what we call the brake time. brake Time is or melt time , In Lammond's
terms , the time which Take the pack or Over lay / Under lay to brake
down or melt and create a feeding frenzy. I have added the Over Lay /
Under lay to a bowl of Water and I timed it with the count down timer
on the Microwave. it took this bait , Just under 4 minutes to brake
down fully and Expose the Smack inside. Not too shabby for 51 degree
water. Notice the Pile that the Over lay leaves Once it starts to brake
down. next is the Over lay , time for it to go. Just a note , If you do
not want to use a puff , smack or pop , Just stiffin' up the Under lay
and decrease the brake time one it and it will last for as long as you
would like.
Now
here is the updated Video also to show a little about the melt/brake:
Click here for the brake time video
As you may already Notice , the Smack , Puff , Pop , Add's a "Bulls
Eye" to the center of the pile. Now , if you get you and Education in
Puffalogy , You can get the Puff to Float Right above Your nice chum
pile. Like so ( By the way , I have no Degree in Puffalogy and have
donated many dollars to P.A. to learn this Fact.
I
hope by this how too , Which I know I may Have left some out , You can
get a glimpse of how to use it and give it a shot. There are many other
methods that help rip fish , And If I may Quote A great paylaker , The
bait Only half catches the Fish! I really Enjoyed doing this and I hope
yall Enjoy Reading it.
