What's the Most Important Rule When Kayak Fishing for Smallmouth?
...Oh... I should add, when testing your new kayak, new fishing rods, and plenty of recently purchased tackle.
My good friend Paul kindly illustrated the answer to this burning question on a recent and fairly productive smallmouth trip.(EDIT: Well, not for Paul.)
First, check your New Kayak for leaks. I don't know that that is what Paul is doing here but it would seem prudent. (EDIT: Apparently Paul installed a small window in the bottom of his Yak in order to determine the best time to FISH FROM UNDERNEATH IT???)
And the Actual Answer is.......
Stay In your Kayak!!!
Because technically you are not kayak fishing when you are under your boat. Kayak fishing roughly defined is "fishing from a kayak and using it as a platform to fish from." Now I'm not sure but perhaps they do it differently where Paul comes from, well to each his own, I just prefer to be warm and not throw my recently purchased expensive fishing tackle into the river. I mean, for Paul, maybe it's some kind of first season sacrifice to the river gods or something; I just truly don't see the point of fishing from underneath my kayak. I should remain open minded to new ideas and try to do so, but I did not notice an increase in smallmouth caught from underneath Paul's kayak. So I'll just add my advice to STAY IN YOUR KAYAK WHEN FISHING IN COLD WATER...and uh and oh yes some secondary rules are secure your Rods, Tackle Boxes, Glasses and don't breath while actually under water. Apparently, this last item is easy to forget when the water is about 55 degrees. I have already learned about the "pucker factor" and chose to remain in my kayak throughout the trip, as did the rest of the party, unlike Paul.
Uh, yeah Paul, I'm not understanding this "Fishing Technique!"
I stopped by Alibi's on the 26th and picked up a Super Magnet and a extendable paint stick formulated into a rudimentary hook. So I go out on the kayak the 26th and peddle all the way up to where Paul lost his rods(only took 3-4 hours). On the way I loose one of my rods and almost end up fishing upside down too. I got one of Pauls Rods and then lost Robs paint stick.
Net Loss= 2 rods, 1 Paintstick, Pauls Tackleboxes, and my Pride!
No good deed!

 I would like for paul to come down to nc and demonstraite this technique to us salt water fisherman to see if it works for tiger sharks. Capt,n Bill
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
