apophosis1.jpg Apophysis Fractal Flame Editor - for Designing Electric Sheep Genomes to Turn Loose Into Cyber-Space for Evolution

I still find myself fascinated by Electric Sheep. Recently I took some time to figure out how to make them and place them into the collective flock.  It might sound complex to design an Electric Sheep Genome but with freely available software for Linux and Windows it's easy.  You can turn out some quite beautiful images.  Moreover, when they are released into the ElectricSheep.org Project they will appear on hundreds of thousands of people's screen savers. Additionally, they will EVOLVE-BREED-CHANGE-LIVE-DIE. This is the true beauty of them.

The software that implements the sheep's genetic code is Fractal Flames, or FLAM3. A Flame Editor like Apophysis translates the numbers of the code into the images and animations making up the bodies of the sheep. Once released to the Electric Sheep Server it is distributed to a collective Render Farm of users who run the Electric Sheep Screen Saver and donate down CPU cycles to generate the frames for motion.

On the Sheep Server, you can see the Flame Genomes along with the Family Tree/Lineage of current and past sheep. You can also download genomes to work with in Apophysis(.Flam files).  Other documentation on FLAM3 is available here and here. There's also a wiki on Apophysis, the flame editor.

Here is the first Sheep I loosed into the wild. Sheep  125743

So here's a simple Video I put together from Open Source Resources (free).  I used a ScreenCapture(Krecordmydesktop ) to capture the animating sheep. I then imported it into Kdenlive , added music and effects, uploaded to google and boom, a nice demo of Electric Sheep.  Although it doesn't do the real Electric Sheep justice, you simply must see it FULL SCREEN to appreciate them..
